Manual Lymphatic Drainage

is used to promote optimal functioning of the lymphatic vessels that remove excess water, toxins, bacteria and foreign substances from your body.  The lymphatic system evolved to support the circulatory system, but without a pump to push the lymph around, it often becomes sluggish. Many people have more sedentary lifestyles, lacking in exercise, adequate hydration and nutrition, all of which can lead to an inefficient lymphatic system.

Although Manual Lymphatic Drainage is considered a massage, the term is very loose.  The treatment itself is a very gentle, flowing and rhythmic massage which only needs to stimulate tissues that lie 1mm below the skin.  It's a very relaxing treatment and you may find yourself nodding off for the duration!

Why would I need Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage relaxes your nervous system, reduces pain, increases energy and facilitates optimal functioning of your immune system.  Aside from manual intervention, lymph flow is stimulated by peristalsis, arterial pulse, exercise and respiration (which is why deep breathing can be so effective at relaxing you).  The latter two you have some control over but some people are more predisposed to having a sluggish lymphatic system despite what they do to help, and there are also other conditions/treatments that can exasperate these effects which are listed opposite.

If you are new to manual lymphatic drainage it's best to start slowly by adding it in at the end of  a massage treatment as it can result in tiredness and even unwell feelings while your body processes the waste that's been accumulating.

If you have been advised to have a treatment for a specific issue (ie pre or post op, or oedema) then it may be beneficial to have a few shorter sessions to help your body deal with the effects more easily.
